I have owned parakeets for many years. Please believe me when I tell you the very best food you can give them is high quality name brand parakeet seeds...the COLORLESS kind. Seeds that are in any way colored, ..greens, reds, yellows, are all cancer causing dyes, the same dyes that give people CANCER! Use natural colored seeds only. And NEVER give your parakeet the manufactured PELLET food. This has far too many vitamins in it, and FAR too much animal protein. Pellets often cause renal failure..which is kidney failure, because their little kidneys must work overtime to remove all the stuff in those artificial pellets. Aside from this, give them treats from the pet store, and put some vegetables in like broccoli or green beans, or strawberries, or pineapples. I just read an article that says some younger people are using their food stamps to buy organic foods, such as salmon and foods in specialty shops.

I think its great that those things are included as acceptable items. I think the state should provide the money to pay for better food on food stamps as well. NOT because its a luxury gourmet food. Rather because you can get better quality food. Meats that arent loaded with steroids and antibiotics. Foods that arent 95% refined flour and sugar. Just because someone is poor and needs help does not mean they should be forced to eat nasty crappy unhealthy food. Its really very sad that the only food many people can afford is junk food. We as a country have been living beyond our means for a very long time. The food supply shows it well. We have sacrificed health for food that is dirt cheap and massively unhealthy. And now people want to call it a gourmet food or a luxury if someone decides that just because they are poor they want to be able to still eat healthy.......

I'm thinking of starting a side business on some land I own. I was thinking about growing organic or specialty type foods there, for sale to gourmet restaurants. I'm looking for suggestions or ideas of what might be good. Things I was thinking of are herbs like basil, rosemary, etc. Possibly greens such as Romaine lettuce or escarole or things like that. Everything grown there would be done so organically. I am also considering the possibility of making specialty cheeses or raising small livestock, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc. The climate is temperate year round and is located within 1 hour of a city of 7 million people, so access to a suitable market is readily available. Seems like you thought this out.....you have a variety in case one item fails for some reason.....be sure you have the space, trained workers and the technology to have all run smoothly...start small and grow...Good luck!

I don't have the time to cook gourmet dinners and I don't have the money to buy fancy designer organic food but I also don't want to eat cheese wiz or hungry man dinners. I'm not so concerned about losing weight but I would like to feel healthy and satisfied. I just want some good tasting, healthy and wholesome real food. Help! What is real food today? What are real food recipes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have answered this question before, and I am confident that these are good recipes, I hope you find it helpful. Always stock these items: pre-bagged salad, veggies (prepare them when you get home, wash, cut and store), italian dressing, pasta, rice, prepared sauces (terriaki, asian, anything you like), pre cooked chicken strips (in a bag at your grocery store, not frozen), beans (lima, chickpea, butter, anything you like), black beans, chopped garlic. BUY SPICEs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, parsley, paprika, chili powder, cumin, whatever YOU LIKE. Now for some ideas. On any given night, you cqan come home and take out the bag of salad, add veggies and dressing and have a chicken sald. Saute some veggies in oil and butter, add to rice and top with your favorite sauce....stir fry. Make pasta, add any combo of veggies, add italian dressing, chill, pasta salad. Buy tortillas, add cooked chicken strips, cheese and veggies, roll up and chill, you have a dippable veggie wrap. Take black beans, red and green pepper, red onion, rotel, taco packet, cumin, parsley, garlic, water, paprika, chili powder, add all together cook for an hour, instant black bean chili or nacho topping. Italian dressing and any bean thats light....lima, chickpea, butter, add dressing and chill...yummy lunch. Search my answers, you will find alot of stuff. Also, you could make pasta, any shape, add any meat, cheese and spaghetti sauce and bake for 30 minutes at 350 uncovered, instant spaghetti bake...ver good left over too.
